Images from the large forest fire above Maesteg in the Welsh valleys that burnt over the weekend of the 31st of May at the end of the driest May on record.

A bird flies over the smoke as it rises into the sky from the burning fire on the Garn Wen mountain which rises above Nantyffyllon near Maesteg.

The trees and landscapes are left scared black by the fire which took over 24-hours to get under control by emergency services.

Fire fighters make their way through the forest in full protective gear to manage the fires . On that weekend alone crews attended nearly 70 deliberate started wildfires across the South Wales region, many requiring specialist vehicles and aerial support to mange as at huge financial cost and drain on resources.

Conditions were perfect for small fires to spread into larger more dangerous incidents as the forest areas were bone dry after weeks of little rainfall across wales. It was the driest May since records began 124 years ago.
